Pinewood Derby launches January 29th

The Pinewood Derby is the premier racing event for Cub Scouts. Pack 317 provides an official Pinewood Derby kit to each Cub Scout, which is built with the help of adults. The Scout begins with a block of balsa wood and four plastic wheels. The finished race car must meet all requirements, as set forth in the Pack 317 Official Pinewood Derby Rules. Blocks can be sanded with sandpaper, sanding block, or a powered sander. Pinewood cars vary from unfinished blocks to whimsical objects, to accurate replicas of actual race cars. The Pack 317 Pinewood Derby™ Race is run on a four-lane hand-crafted wood derby track that slopes down to the ground, since the cars are powered by gravity. We use computer software to administer and officiate the results of the race. The race is run in heats, by den, and overall pack winners.

This year's Pinewood Derby will be on January 29, 2022 at the Plano American Legion. Kits will be distributed to Scouts at the December 13, 2021 den meetings. More information is available on our Pinewood Derby webpage.

Summer Resident Camp at Camp Rokilio

Camp Rokilio provides a GREAT OUTDOOR ADVENTURE for Cub Scouts (entering 1st through 5th grade in the fall of 2022) and their parents and leaders on 213 beautiful acres of hilly terrain with tall timber located in the Kettle Moraine, seven miles east of Kiel, Wisconsin!

Camp Rokilio consists of a 3-day/2-night stay in one of the camp’s four themed buildings, which includes the Fort J.J. Keller, Gunderson Viking Bäten Ship, Kohler Castle, and Oertle Train Station. The buildings' amenities include; electricity, water, flush toilets, showers, kitchen, and living quarters with beds for both adults and youth. Camp Rokilio provides an introduction to camping in a very comfortable and stylistic way!

As a Cub Scout becomes accustomed to the out-of-doors with their Den, they unconsciously absorbs some of the greatness of nature itself — the quiet of the forest, the cheerfulness of a running stream, the breadth of a body of water, the openness of the sky, the freshness of the wind, the curiousness of a bog with insect eating plants, and the beauty of a sunset.

By spending time outdoors, they learn some of the skills, resourcefulness, and self-reliance of the pioneers. The woods, the streams, the trails, and the wild creatures that inhabit them become friends, and the out-of-doors becomes a lifelong source of recreation.

Camping is an opportunity for the continuation of Cub Scouting throughout the summer! The camp program is designed to meet the needs and interests of Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos, and parents; therefore, preparation for adventure belt loops and activity pins are continuous and consistent with the program in the Pack.

All of Scouting is an educational program, and since education consists primarily of determining the individual’s learning needs and proceeding to satisfy those needs, the Camp Rokilio program is designed to promote a meaningful and educational experience. The program consists of 3 days of waterfront, shooting sports (BB Guns/Archery), Nature, Campfires, Chapel, theme related projects and activities, as well as, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) activities and NOVA awards.

Cub Scouts and their parents, grandparents and leaders can choose a session that fits into their schedule. All Cub Scouts are required to attend resident camp with a parent for the entire duration of camp. We will attend Camp Rokilio from June 27-29, 2022. A $25 deposit (per Scout) is due by the December 13th den meetings to reserve your spot!
